O FRASCO DE MAIONESE E CAFÉ / THE MAYONNAISE JAR AND COFFEE

Quando as coisas na vida parecem demasiado, quando 24 horas por dia não são suficientes, lembre-se do frasco de maionese e do café.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar... and the coffee...

Um professor, durante a sua aula de filosofia sem dizer uma palavra, pega num frasco de maionese e esvazia-o. Tirou a maionese e encheu-o com bolas de golf. A seguir perguntou aos alunos se o Frasco estava cheio. Os estudantes responderam que sim.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.  When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.  He then asked the students if the jar was full.  They agreed that it was.

Então o professor pega numa caixa cheia de pedrinhas e mete-as no frasco de maionese. As pedrinhas encheram os espaços vazios entre as bolas de golf. O professor voltou a perguntar aos alunos se o frasco estava cheio e eles voltaram a dizer que sim.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.  He shook the jar lightly.  The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.  He then asked the students again if the jar was full.  They agreed it was.

Então o professor pegou em outra caixa um saco de areia e esvaziou-o para dentro do frasco de maionese. Claro que a areia encheu todos os espaços vazios e uma vez mais o professor voltou a perguntar se o frasco estava cheio. Nesta ocasião os estudantes responderam de forma unânime "SIM!".

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.  Of course, the sand filled up everything else.  He asked once more if the jar was full.  The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

Em seguida o professor acrescentou 2 xícaras de café ao frasco e claro que o café preencheu todos espaços vazios entre a areia. Os estudantes nesta ocasião começaram a rir, mas repararam que o professor estava sério e disse-lhes:

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.  The students laughed.

"Quero que se dêem conta que este frasco representa a vida. As bolas de golf são as coisas IMPORTANTES: como a família, a saúde, os amigos, tudo o que você ama de verdade. São coisas que mesmo que perdessemos todo o resto, nossas vidas continuariam cheias. As pedrinhas são as outras coisas que importam: como o trabalho, a casa, o carro, etc. A areia é tudo o demais, as pequenas coisas.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, " I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.  The golf balls are the important things-your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions-things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.  The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.  The sand is everything else-the small stuff."

Se puséssemos 1º a areia no frasco, não haveria espaço para as pedrinhas nem para as bolas de golf e o mesmo acontece com a vida. Se gastássemos todo o nosso tempo e energia nas coisas pequenas, nunca teríamos lugar para as coisas que são realmente importantes. Preste atenção as coisas que são cruciais para a sua Felicidade. Brinque com os seus filhos. Arranje tempo para ir ao médico; namore e vá com sua/seu namorada(o)/marido/mulher jantar fora; dedique algumas horas para uma boa conversa e diversão com seus amigos; pratique seu esporte ou hobbie favorito. Haverá sempre tempo para trabalhar, limpar a casa, arrumar o carro. Ocupe-se sempre das bolas de golf primeiro, que representam as coisas que realmente importam na sua vida. Estabeleça suas prioridade, o resto é só areia...".

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.  The same goes for life.  If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.  Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.  Play with your children.  Take time to get medical checkups.  Take your partner out to dinner.  There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.  Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter.  Set your priorities.  The rest is just sand."

Porém, um dos estudantes levantou a mão e perguntou o que representaria nessa história toda, O CAFÉ.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

O professor sorriu e disse: "O café é só para demonstrar que não importa o quanto a nossa vida esteja ocupada, sempre haverá espaço para um café com um amigo".

The professor smiled.  "I'm glad you asked.  It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
